From "Japan Today" online news

"More and more young teachers can't stand firm when parents confront them. Such teachers tend to be vulnerable to mental breakdowns. "
Kazunori Nakajima, head of the psychoneurotic department at Sanraku Hospital in Tokyo, commenting on the threefold increase in the number of teachers taking sick leave due to depression and other mental illnesses over the past decade. (Yomiuri Shimbun)

hmm...

One of my teachers mentioned that depression is the leading reason for teachers to take sick leave. Parents call the school when their kid acts out at home and ask the teacher why the kid is misbehaving and what they are going to do about it...yikes!

I know. It's quite scary. It doesn't seem to be so bad in small towns, but I'm sure the bigger cities make up for it. Most of the teachers I work for seem to like their job -but they could also be putting on their 'gaman' face, ne?
